Age 89 of Brighton, MI passed away on Tuesday, May 15, from complications of cancer. She was born on April 3, 1929, in Detroit. She earned her B.A. in home economics from Wayne University in 1952, and her M.Ed. in reading from Eastern Michigan University in 1979. Married to John for 60 years, they moved to Brighton in 1969. She loved her vocation of teaching, which she pursued for 30 years. At the birth of each of her four children she quit her job, then went back because she missed the kids. For more than 15 years she taught first grade at Miller and Hornung Elementary Schools, and took seriously her role in giving her students the crucial skill of reading. In retirement she became a fiber artist, making beautiful traditional hooked rugs and penny rugs. In this she showed her stewardship as a child of the Depression, delighting in finding suit coats at thrift shops and cutting them apart for the 100% wool that she used to create functional art. Shirley followed the Tigers and Red Wings all her life, but nothing got her out of her chair like MSU basketball. She found dear friends playing Skip-bo at the Hartland Senior Center. Her family is grateful to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice.
Shirley is survived by her children, Matthew, Chrisann Lowe (Fred), Andrew (Faith Brady), and Julie (Kathy Griffin); grandchildren Julia and Christian; many nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gertrude Jehnsen; husband, John; siblings Sophie Vanderlip, Richard Jehnsen, Clarence (Chum) Jehnsen, Hilton (Dick) Jehnsen, and Vera Jehnsen.
Friends and loved ones are invited to a memorial on June 3 at 5 p.m. at Ciao Amici’s in Brighton.
Memorial contributions in honor of Shirley are recommended to the Hartland Senior Activity Center, 9525 E Highland Rd, Howell, MI 48843.
